Dr. Matthias Schuster
Scientific Director
Matthias Schuster joined Dx assays as Scientific Director in January 2009. He is responsible for the scientific team and coordinates projects internally and externally.
Before joining Dx assays, he was the Vice President, Research of Epigenomics AG in Berlin, Germany, a MDx company focusing on the development and commercialization of DNA methylation-based tests for 7 years. At Epigenomics, he was responsible for DNA methylation technology development encompassing biomarker discovery and validation technologies. Matthias was involved in planning and coordinating collaborative research studies for demonstrating the utility of biomarkers on the platforms of partner companies (e.g. Roche Diagnostics, Affymetrix, QIAGEN, Abbott Molecular) and R&D towards a blood-based test for colorectal cancer screening.
Prior to Epigenomics, he worked as a Postdoc in the Organic Chemistry department of the Scripps Research Institute, San Diego, US for 2 years and as Head of Laboratory at Technical University Berlin, Germany for 7 years. In both positions, the focus of his work was on the application of enzymes towards the synthesis of peptides, glycopeptides and complex carbohydrates.
He personally likes to hike, run and spend time with his family in the rainforest.
